The “American Idol” runner up is pictured on the cover of the October 6, 2008 issue of People magazine with his new son and a large headline that reads, “Yes, I’m Gay”.

I suppose it doesn’t get much clearer than that. Though Aiken publicly came out out in his interview  with People and followed it up with an interview this morning on Good Morning America, came out to his mom four years ago. He talks about that moment and the reactions of his family and friends in the video below.

Aiken, now 29, was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and participated in the “American Idol” competition in 2003. After losing to Reuben Studdard, he still went on to become that season’s best selling artist. Currently he is surpassed only by “American Idol” winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

In July of 2003, a few months after “Idol” Clay was on the cover of Rolling Stone, inside Aiken said “One thing I’ve found of people in the public eye, either you’re a womanizer or you’ve got to be gay. Since I’m neither one of those, people are completely concerned about me.”

Later, in 2006 he told People magazine, ” It doesn’t matter what I say. People are going to believe what they want.” This comment was also in regards to the frequesnt questioning of his sexuality.

Following the reality Tv competition Clay went on to release 5 albums, the most recent one being On My Way Here, which came out (no pun intended) on May 6, 2008, just a few months before the birth of his son.

Parker Foster Aiken, who was conceived via artificial insemination, was born on August 8, 2008. Parker’s mother (and Clay’s best friend) is 50 year-old Jaymes Foster who has been very close with Aiken since working with him during “American Idol”. She is also the executive producer of Aiken’s last three albums. Months ago following the pregnancy announcement The Post Chronicle reported that Clay intended to be a big part of the child’s life but did not intend to marry Foster. (Well that makes sense)

According to People, Aiken credits his newborn son for helping him to make the decision to come out. He felt that he could not raise a child to lie or be secretive and that therefore he also could not live a lie.  In addition to adjusting to being a new dad, Clay returned to his broadway role as Sir Robin in “Monty Python’s Spamalot” last week.
